My Roots were Showing

    I didn't take a dip in the Hot Tub Time Machine but volunteering with the Sutter Cup hockey tournament did turn back the clock for me. 
 
  After hours in the Max Bell Centre for the Southern Alberta minor midget playoffs, memories of my teen years and the countless days spent in the Smithers arena trickled back. When my kids ask, incredulously, what we did before the Internet and video games, they furrow their brows when I tell them about being a "rink rat" all days Saturday and Sunday; everything from drilling those holes for the nets to sweeping the stands of garbage.
 
  Had to wonder though as I watched the kids skate...what would have happened had I lost the coin flip with Kevin Harrison in grade 9?  We had both been doing minor hockey announcing when a chance to do the men's league game came ...

   The Academy Awards tried to be more populist by expanding it's list of best movie nominees from 5 to 10 to include movies people had ACTUALLY SEEN and thought were best of the year.
  But then "The Hurt Locker", seen by virtually none of your award show watchers, gets the Best Picture because after all, only the Academy can tell you what's good, yah know.  Old, vain elitists poo-pooing populist choices because the great unwashed just 'don't understand art'....
   In a world where everyone can publish their opinion on any subject in seconds, this is not a quaint anachronism anymore..It's just hopelessly out of date...
 
But that could just be me

Hawaiian Surfari

The goal for today is not to get me killed. That's what my surf instructor, James, has told me. It's good when you and your instructor have common goals. I am going along with Hans Hedemann Surf in Waikiki on a North Shore Adventure. We will be stopping along the way to look at the famous big waves of Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea. These are the places that professional surfers test their skill and sanity on swells that, in the winter months, can easily reach over 30 feet. I won't be surfing there, James informs me. Good to know.
