Faith Hill came out with her first album when I was ten years old. Ten is a pretty formative time in a young girl’s life, so it’s no wonder that I immediately fell in love with her. Talented, beautiful, such a shiny, happy person, I wanted to be JUST like her. By the time “This Kiss” came out, I was so deeply invested that I cut my hair just like she had in the video. Unfortunately, that look only works on certain people, so I had a good cry and then spent the next 2 years putting my hair back with about 30 clips.
Since today is Faith’s 50th birthday, I wanted to celebrate by looking back through some of my favourite Faith tunes. Some have official videos, some don’t. The music remains just as great.
* I’m not going to delve into duets, that’s an entirely different list.
Happy birthday, Faith! I have no doubt you’ll be celebrating with your handsome, sweet, hubby.
10. “I Can’t Do That Anymore’ – It Matters To Me
This was one of the first songs I ever felt emotionally connected to, even though (at the time) I’d never been in a relationship before. Faith has always been the best at letting you feel what she feels.
9. “Breathe” – Breathe
Breathe is the best possible song for belting out in your car or interpretive dancing with your girlfriends at the bar after having 3 too many vodka-crans. Also, by far the sexiest video Faith has ever done.
8. “If You Ask” – Fireflies
“If You Ask” is one of Faith’s most devastating songs for me. The line “I don’t want to be your policeman” really hit me in the heart. I think anyone who has ever had a partner that’s struggled with addiction would really connect with this song. Mine may be in the past, but it still breaks my heart to listen to this song.
7. “Stealing Kisses” – Fireflies
This song is actually a heartbreaker as well. Fireflies had some really dark moments on it, and I guess I like the dark tunes best.
Fun fact: Lori McKenna (who wrote “Humble And Kind”) also wrote this song!
6. “The Secret Of Life” – Faith
This one is a little more upbeat and a great singalong song. For me it’s reminiscent of Kenny Chesney’s “The Good Stuff”, and I love that song too.
5. “It Matters To Me” – It Matters To Me
This is another song that I was way too young to connect with but did anyway. Faith is a master of emotion, also, her hair is the definition of “90’s country” in this video, which I love.
4. “You Can’t Lose Me” – It Matters To Me
This tune was such a loving, upbeat jam, and Faith has said that it was one of her favourite videos to make. I love it the most because my mom, sister, and I always sang along to it together. There’s something special in that.
3. “This Kiss” – Faith
This one ranks so high, not solely because of the song and video, but it just hit at the perfect time in my life where I had my first boyfriend, and everything was new and magical. Unfortunately, it also resulted in the aforementioned haircut that I do not have even have one picture of now. Disappointing, yet relieving.
2. “There Will Come A Day” – Breathe
I’m not at all a religious person, but this song is 100% a spiritual experience. I think this is one of the best demonstrations of how powerful Faith’s voice is, and I just love it.
1. “Love Ain’t Like That” – Faith
This song has been out for 18 years now, and I would say it still runs through my head at least a couple times a week. It never hit number one or anything, but it is one of my all-time fave Faith songs. She just knows how to pack the emotion into it.
Thanks for all the tunes, Faith, you’ve been with me through heartache and happiness. Xo
BONUS: “Where Are You Christmas” – How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Because really, who doesn’t love this song? (And it’s snowing today)
