His masterstroke–the one that infuriated everyone else in baseball but endeared him to even the most casual of Canadian fans–came less than two years ago when Jose Bautista homered and defiantly flipped his bat in a tension filled playoff game. Hard to believe that was less than 2 years ago considering how far Bautista’s skills have fallen since that day.
There’s no longer consideration from the team and most fans over whether Bautista will wear a Bluejays uniform after his contract expires at the end of September. Yes, fans still love him but his batting average, power stats and fielding skills are not what they once were.
There’s even critics out there that don’t believe Bautista will be a big league ball player anywhere in 2018. So the final six weeks of his Bluejay tenure are likely to be filled with tributes and ovations–and should be–for what Bautista has accomplished as one of the Bluejays all time greats.
