The province gave an update yesterday on the preparations they’re making to welcome 4 giant pandas to the Calgary Zoo in 2018. Construction on a panda housing facility that’s expected to increase Calgary Zoo visitors by 20 per cent is getting closer to completion. The bears are set to arrive next spring, as part of China’s internationally-coordinated Giant Panda Conservation Breeding Program. They are currently in Toronto. The AB government announced $10 million in funding for the development of the Panda Passage in 2016. The City of Calgary contributed $8.15 million. The project is expected to create about 40 new zoo-related jobs.
The last time we saw pandas at the Calgary Zoo was when they came as part of the 1988 Winter Olympics. Do you remember this tune they had to get everyone excited about their visit?
I was pretty little, but I vaguely remember my parents bringing us up to see them from Cranbrook at that time. I wanted to sit in the lap of a real one, but I guess these guys had to do.
