Mcmahon will always be in my heart but a profusion of football stadiums in recent years has left 57 year old Mcmahon Stadium as the CFL’s most decrepit. And the latest plan to upgrade Calgary’s sports facilities leaves the old girl out of the equation again and the Stampeders in an increasingly desperate situation regarding their CFL future.
Attendance has been falling at Mcmahon despite the team’s excellent performance. There are issues with the CFL itself but the primary reason is public standards are higher than they were in 1960. Washrooms and the concourse are the main culprits. Expensive lipstick has been applied a couple of times in the past but in a world where padded reclining movie seats greet movie ticket buyers, Mcmahon just isn’t what the clientelle expects in an entertainment facility anymore.
When dollars are tight, priorities must be set, and an arena for the hockey club will always get more support than one for the local CFL team, if for no other fact that it has more functionality and more of the creature comforts patrons now demand. Sadly, no amount of lipstick will change that.
