Like many others, I have been looking forward to the live-action remake of Beauty and The Beast for a LONG TIME. I was 8 years old when the original Disney animated version came out, so needless to say, I was obsessed with it. To this day, (25 years later) the lyrics “little town, it’s a quiet village” go through my head on the daily.
When they initially said the were going to do this remake, all I could think was “PLEASE don’t screw this up!” We all know how remakes can go and we’ve all seen enough bad ones to be a little leery when it comes to redoing stuff.
I am so happy to say that as someone who went into it a bit skeptically, I watched the show on Saturday night and I LOVED it! A lot of it was exactly the same as the original, and that’s what I was hoping for. I find remakes generally go off the rails when they try to start adding stuff, and though they did this with B&B, it didn’t wreck the show! A couple new songs, a little bit more backstory and not once did I think “why are they doing this?” Two hours plus just flew by and I smiled almost the entire time. I was also THISclose to singing a couple of times. It’s hard not to.
The actors were SO well suited for their roles, with Gaston (Luke Evans) and LeFou (Josh Gad) really stealing a good chunk of the show.
The one thing I think I would mention if you’re planning on bringing your little prince or princesses, is that Beauty and The Beast is actually a pretty scary story. I remember not loving the wolf attack scenes when I was younger and they are definitely a little more freaky when they happen in “real life”. We had a little gal (about 4) sitting by us with her mom during the show and she did NOT love most of it, with The Beast also looking pretty scary as well. Everyone knows their own kid, but just as a warning, even I forgot how many scary scenes there were.
That said, when Belle came out at the end in the infamous gold dress, that same little gal beside us said “WOW!”. I felt the exact same way. Two thumbs up from me!
SIDEBAR: I recently started going to those theatres with the reclining chairs. They are awesome. 10/10 would recommend.
