When their little girl Thea was complaining of a pain in her leg, Patrick and Lesley figured it must be growing pains. As the pain wasn’t subsiding, they brought her to the Alberta Children’s Hospital on a Friday afternoon where she received an x-ray. The report indicated that further scans would be necessary so she was booked for a CT Scan and MRI the following Monday.
After the tests were completed on Monday morning, Lesley and Thea were taken into a room where the Emerg doc came in and told them that they believed she had cancer in her leg bone. Lesley could barely believe what she was hearing. (If you can imagine, her husband, Patrick was in New Orleans for work and she had to call him to fly home…he was understandably crushed by the news.) From there, they were introduced to oncologist, Dr. Doug Strother who assured them that they were going to take great care of her and get her on the path to get things better…in a hurry.
Thea was admitted to hospital the next day to have a central line installed in her chest and a biopsy. With a confirmed diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma – which had unfortunately spread to her lungs, she began chemotherapy right away. It was a whirlwind, says Lesley. After six rounds of chemo in twelve weeks, they were faced with the choice of having Thea’s leg amputated or fighting the tumor with radiation. After much deliberation, the family chose to begin radiation and Thea underwent 28 straight days of daily trips to the Tom Baker for radiation to her leg.
Before Christmas, tumours were found in Thea’s lungs and she underwent surgery to remove them. Her doctors will try her on a new chemo cocktail to try and make sure the tumours in her lungs don’t come back. She will have a scan 6 weeks after that treatment.
Through it all, Thea has maintained her incredible spirit and smile. When people tell her she’s brave, she is quick to say “I’m being positive.”
Thea worked with Jesse in Music Therapy on a song that was written for her by a family friend. It’s called “He Loves Her Too”, and you can listen to it right here!
