Jen and Luke are the parents of three beautiful children – Bailey, Jacob and Jackson. Family has always been a priority for the couple who have worked incredibly hard at keeping theirs happy, healthy and secure – even when life threw them circumstances that no parent should ever have to face – the loss of a child.
Anyone who has young kids understands that rushed, hectic feeling of getting the family where they need to be. It was a typical summer day in 2014 when Dad, Luke, was dropped off at the Alberta Children’s Hospital where he volunteers in the PICU. Jen returned home to look after their three young children. That afternoon, just like any other, the kids went down for their naps. But a short while later when Jen looked in on them, she found her 4-month-old baby Jackson in his crib not breathing. Terrified, she immediately began CPR and 911 was called. When EMS arrived they took over CPR and rushed Jackson with his mum to the Alberta Children’s Hospital with police escort. Luke was confused to be called away from his volunteer shift in the PICU, hearing that one of his children had been brought into Emergency. But he would never have believed that it was for something so devastating. Until, he saw his wife’s face. Their little boy Jackson was gone.
Jen and Luke are sharing their story today because they want to highlight the importance of the grief support program at the Rotary Flames House and how the program’s incredible support has helped their family to navigate the darkest time of their lives.
