The great divide is a little finger of BC that cuts over Sunshine ski resort…you cross from Alberta to BC and back to Alberta again all without leaving your chairlift seat.
A great divide is also forming in Alberta…around Red Deer….to the south, there is despair and desperation as Alberta’s primary revenue source – the oil industry – hemorrhages red ink and eliminates jobs at a frightening rate.
But to the north – in the government town of Edmonton – there is no such feeling that the walls are closing in. Government’s bloated bureacracy is unscathed after a year of economic tumult and those in the capital feel much less stress than oil company heavy Calgary.
And i don’t mean teachers and nurses the Premier ALWAYS cites when describing government workers – I mean the phalanx of legislature trolls and party faithful who find themselves on the provincial payroll each year.
The resentment is growing and after 2.1 billion in losses in the third quarter from big oil, more human carnage will be coming.
On the north side of the great divide – they watch dispassionately – secure that today’s price of oil will cost them no worry. They are Alberta’s new 1 per cent…the few in the province not worried that today might be clean out your desk day.
