Growing up as a kid on the prairies there were a couple of words that brought joy to my sister and I, “Daddy’s Home”. Sadly for too many Calgary kids that just brings fear.
If you supported me during last years “walk a mile in her shoes” event for the YWCA you helped shelter some of the 233 women and 257 kids fleeing family violence, who found safety, refuge and hope at the Sheriff King Home.
That shelter is just one of the ways your donation helps break the cycle of family violence. There are other shelters full every night. Beyond a safe place to stay over 2000 men women and children were helped through specialized family violence programs and counselling.
There are a host of other support programs offered by the YWCA for women in transition.
Tomorrow though it’s about putting on high heels and walking from Bankers Hall to Olympic Plaza to help a woman and her kids take that daunting and frightening first step. You and I can help them walk away from violence, and keep them safe.
Calgary Police answer 16 thousand “domestic” calls a year. Can you please answer this one?
