Rode the C train from Stampede on the weekend with a senior from Somerset,England who was visiting for her 2nd Calgary Stampede. She’d grown up on a farm in southwest England and was a rodeo fan even though she could not see a rodeo in England because it has been banned in that country since 1934……
That got me wondering how long the Stampede is sustainable…
Each year, opponents of the Rangeland Derby and rodeo are vocal in their opposition and call for the end of the event.
Each year, the face of Calgary changes as well, and more and more residents have not grown up with the events and therefore don’t have an emotional stake in the debate. Spurred by changing attitudes, Calgarians may vote with their wallets one day and abandon the rodeo, but that’s not been the case yet.
So does rodeo go away or even get banned as it is in Vancouver?
Hard to imagine a Calgary Stampede without it, but Stampede founder Guy Weadick would be hard pressed to imagine the world of 2015 when he looked to immortalize the old west way of life at the first Stampede in 1912.
Time change. Will the Stampede?
