Amid no expectations and featuring faces not far removed from their high school proms, this year’s Flames are the bright spot of 2015 to date for a city that needed something to cheer.
I often scoff when Chamber of Commerce estimates the worth to a city of a certain event, like a Brier or Grey Cup, and it seems outrageously high. But how would you measure what the Flames have been worth to this city this spring? People spoke of how proud they were of these boys, proud it seemed that these were the fine young men who never quit who represented us-Calgary. A tremendous lift to a psyche staggering, how do you measure that worth?
It was the high speed, never stop attitude that quickly grabbed fans and made us say, more times than not, how “fun” the team was to watch. And even though they couldn’t possibly keep this up, what a good night of entertainment after the frustration of more talented teams taking too many nights off. But it just kept going, as the odds got crazier and crazier with the captain out and three men shouldering the work of six on defense.
Sure there was sadness when the Ducks doused the Flames, and this year’s performance is no guarantee of future glory for them. But as season’s go ,it was better than most and couldn’t have come at a better time.
