Paramedics have taken approximately 15 patients to various hospitals within Calgary and surrounding area, following a number of collisions on Highway 2 south of Calgary near 370th Ave. One person was in critical condition, while the remaining patients are believed to be suffering from serious to minor injuries.
RCMP had earlier closed Highway 2 in both directions between the Aldersyde and Okotoks overpasses because of the crashes. Several semi’s are involved. RCMP and other emergency crews remain on scene. Callers to our newsroom say highway conditions in the area are very icy.
Meantime, RCMP in Strathmore are asking motorist to avoid travel on Highway 1 between Strathmore and Calgary due to the snowfall today. Near zero temperatures along with the snowfall, have resulted in extremely icy conditions which are difficult to see due to the snow cover. There have been reports of multiple accidents along Highway 1, but no injuries have been reported.
