Canadian’s are known for being polite. Unfortunately, I think the truth in that is diminishing. But my faith in politeness was restored today. I popped by Subway to grab supper on the way to work and the gentlemen behind the counter was incredibly polite. So much so, that I felt myself expressing extra politeness towards him. He greeted me, asked how I was doing and even called me ma’am. Highly unnecessary but definitely appreciated. He even thanked me when I, in return, asked how his day was. Although our conversation was brief, he still managed to put me in a great mood. It made me think, “why can’t everyone be that polite?”
We’re busy people. Always rushing from place to place. Sending quick, abbreviated emails and text messages all day long. But if you think about it, what effort does it really take to just be polite? None. It literally takes no effort to cough up a quick “thank you” if someone holds a door open for you. “Please” should just naturally come at the end of a sentence when you’re asking for something. When did we become too busy to use these words? I think we could all learn a little lesson from the nice man behind the Subway counter…a little politeness does go a long way!
