All this time, some 20 years now I thought Spike the elephant at the Calgary Zoo was home. It turns out he was just on an extended loan from Busch Garden’s in Florida who sent him up here after Hurricane Andrew. I know zoos have become controversial in the past number of years with some folks feeling they’re no place for animals. I look at zoos as insurance there is some place for animals. Chances are I’ll never see an elephant in the wild, or a giraffe, a hippo, a zebra, a lion or a gorilla. The zoo has given me the chance to get close to these magnificent creatures, learn a little more about them and treasure those places where they still can run wild and free. In short the zoo has made me care about what happens to the animals in a way only watching them up close could ever do. I’m sad to see the elephants leave the zoo. Spike is headed home. Thanks for the visit and the memories Spike. Bon Voyage!
